Choosing Baby Equipment for Baby

After your first visit with your obstetrician, you will find your mailbox inundated with all kinds of baby magazines and ads for every possible piece of baby equipment that you can imagine. This does not even take into account all of the people that will gladly give you advice, even when not requested. Although many of the items are handy and work well, there are many that play upon your fears as a first time parent or are just silly! There is a list following that tells you about the items that you will want to think about purchasing. To save money, you can even look at second hand stores for many of these items or ask friends with babies older than yours if you can borrow or purchase their items.

A car seat is mandatory, as hospitals will not even let you leave with the baby until you show them that you know how to buckle the baby in the seat. Many times, they will also follow you to the car to make sure it is installed correctly in the car. Car seats will be outgrown at least twice before your child grows out of them by the age of eight. If you are considering a second-hand car seat, ensure that it meets safety requirements.

A baby monitor is a great tool to be able to hear the baby from any room in the house. This way you do not have to stay close to their room all the time. At night, I recommend that you turn the monitor off because you will hear every moan and movement that the baby makes and this can keep you awake. You need to get your rest to take care of your baby.

When you are choosing a crib, you need to look for one that has these features.

o Choose a good quality mattress that is firm.
o The mattress should fit the crib snugly on all four sides.
o The guardrail should be at least 26 inches above the top of the mattress.
o The crib slats space should be no more than 2.375 inches.
o The crib bumper will help keep the babys legs and arms out of the crib slats.

A bouncy seat is a great place for you baby to be when it is not possible to hold her and is a great place to feed them their first meals of rice cereal. They cannot usually sit up well enough for a high chair when they begin cereals and the bouncy seat is a great answer to this problem.

A sling or backpack is a great tool to carry baby if you use caution with it. If you use it too much, however, your baby could possibly have neck or back problems. Choose a sling or backpack that fits you very well and that grows with the baby. The Snugli is great for younger babies that cannot sit up and for older babies the Hip Hammock works great.

One of the most difficult jobs for parents is potty training. You can make it easier on yourself and your little one by purchasing potty seats and step stools that are easy to use and store. Choose a video to learn different techniques on teaching your child to go potty.

7 Stages of Potty Training

There are seven stages of potty training. They begin with showing signs of potty training readiness and conclude with being able to use the toilet away from home.

Signs of Readiness - The first stage of potty training begins when your child shows the following signs of potty training readiness:

Expresses an interest in the potty
Express the need to go potty (verbally or through body language)
Able to dress and undress
Uncomfortable in wet diapers
Stays dry for two hours
Imitates family members
Interested in big kid underwear
Has regular bowel movements

Introduction to the Idea of Potty Training When your child shows a majority of the signs of potty training readiness, it’s time to introduce him to the concept of using the potty. This can be done by reading a potty training book as a bedtime story or watching a potty training video or DVD together. Purchase a potty chair and let your child watch you use the potty. Children will often imitate family members.

Sit On the Potty When your child has been introduced to the concept of potty training, he will probably imitate family member and sit on his potty chair while you use the bathroom. This is a good time to teach good hygiene such as wiping and washing hands after using the potty.

Use the Potty Sometimes Be sure to give your child plenty of liquids and take him to the potty every 30 minutes. This will help build muscle memory. The first time your child uses the potty, make a big deal of his huge accomplishment. A hug, encouraging words, or a small reward can be good motivational tools and help your child feel proud of his or her accomplishment.

Use the Potty Alone As your child gets more comfortable with the potty and his ability to control his bodily functions, he will go to the potty by himself. He will then come tell you about it. Again, this is a time for lots of praise and encouragement.

Transition to the Toilet When your child is comfortable using his potty seat, it’s time to transition him to the toilet. Many children are afraid of falling in, so you may need to purchase a toilet seat adapter such as the Flip-N-Flush or the PRIMO’s Ducka toilet adapter. These devices reduce the size of the toilet hole, thereby making you child feel more secure.

Use Potty Away From Home The last stage of potty training occurs when your child is able to use the potty away from home. Thankfully, there are many portable and disposable toilet seats available to keep your child from coming in contact with public toilet seats. Many public bathrooms have auto-flush toilets with electronic sensors. These sensors often fail to detect that a child is seated on the toilet and cause the toilet to flush repeatedly, scaring the child. Devices such as the Flush-Stopper prevent auto-flush toilets from flushing while your child is seated.

Some children breeze through the seven stages of potty training in a matter of weeks, while other children take several months to complete potty training. Your child’s progress depends on his or her stage of development, your potty training knowledge, and the potty training products you have available.

They can also be used for storing expressed milk and when the baby gets older, as juice or water bottles. The 8-ounce and 9-ounce bottles are more versatile and long lasting.
There are enough types of bottles available today to make you wonder which one is right for your baby. However, they can be broken down into basically three categories:

Standard bottles These have straight necks and bodies and can be used over and over again. All bottles are marked in ounces for easy and precise portion control of the formula. It's best to buy clear plastic or glass bottles so that you can observe the milk flow as baby drinks it.
Bottles with angled necks Designed to keep the nipple filled with liquid to reduce baby's air intake, bottles with angled necks also promote holding the baby's head in an upright position. Many doctors believe that feeding in this position helps prevent ear infection in babies.
Disposable systems Disposable systems have a hard plastic shell called the nurser, which holds disposable plastic bags. For one-time use, the bags are presterilized to hold formula. The system comes with a special nipple and screw-on collar that holds the bag in place. The advantage of this system is that the disposable bags contract to prevent babies from sucking in air bubbles that cause them to spit up. Plus, it is ready to use and requires no cleaning. The nipples, however, need to be thoroughly cleaned, as with any bottle.

Nipples

When bottle-feeding your baby, make sure the nipple hole is of the right size. If your child appears to be sucking too hard, you probably need a fast/medium-flow nipple. An overly resistant nipple could collapse under your baby's strong sucking motion. On the other hand, if your baby seems to be sputtering and gulping often, your baby could need a slow-flow nipple. For a newborn, you know the nipple size is right when the milk comes out in a spray for a second or two when the bottle is inverted, and then trickles down to drops.

Types of nipples

Traditional, bell-shaped nipples These have a range of hole sizes from standard to small for newborns, to large for toddlers or for pulpy juice drinks. Some brands of nipples have just one hole and others have two or even three holes to ensure an easy flow of the formula. It is best to use the nipple and collar from the same manufacturer to ensure a tight fit and to avoid messy leaks.
Orthodontic nipples Orthodontic nipples have an irregular shape and are designed to resemble a mother's nipple in the baby's mouth after repeated sucking. The nipples are elongated and have an indent in the center to evoke the same tonguing action of breastfeeding babies. It is believed that this helps in reducing the tongue thrusting and bite problems caused by standard nipples.
Latex nipples Elongated to promote breastfeeding-like suckling action, latex nipples cause the milk to be delivered at the back of the baby's tongue instead of the mouth. However, latex nipples should be checked after two to three months for deterioration, cracks, or clogging.
Silicone nipples These are made of a clear, heat-resistant material that can withstand being washed in a dishwasher. Since silicone is a less porous material than latex, it isn't as prone to bacteria. Typically, silicone nipples last three to four times longer than latex. However, all nipples must be checked every two to three months for deterioration.

Formula

Babies need plenty of nutrients growing up, and next to mother's milk, formula is the best source. In fact, formula alone can meet a baby's nutritional needs for up to six months, after which doctors recommend introducing solids, in the form of baby food, to infants. Many start as early as four months, after which the baby's diet includes a well-balanced mix of both. It's best to check with your pediatrician, as every baby has a different schedule.

There are two basic types of formula: cow's milk and soy. The soy formula is designed for babies with a family history of allergies. Do not give ordinary cow's milk to infants because it does not have the nutrients babies need. Plus, their digestive system is not yet capable of effectively breaking down and utilizing its nutritional components.

Formula comes in three forms: liquid concentrate, powder, and ready-to-feed. It is important that you follow the instructions to prepare the formula, using the same measuring spoon provided by the manufacturer. Diluting the powder or liquid concentrate form too much or too little is not good for your child. Also be sure to follow storing instructions. Usually, once the concentrate or ready-to-feed cans/bottles have been opened, you need to refrigerate and use them within the next 24 to 48 hours, as specified by the manufacturer. The ready-to-feed does not require any water. Formula should be at room temperature for a feeding.

Bottle Feeding Accessories

There are many accessories available to help you bottle-feed. Whether it's warming, cleaning, sterilizing, or transporting, there is a bottle-feeding accessory for you.

Bottle brushes A must if you are using a standard or angled baby bottle. Bottles often prove to be a cleaning challenge without them.

Safety Tips

Never try to warm formula in the microwave, because it may be unevenly heated and parts could scald baby.
Do not let baby fall asleep with the bottle, as bedtime bottles may lead to teeth decay from formula accumulation in the mouth.
Do not prop the bottle when feeding baby, as it may cause choking. Always hold baby in a semi-upright position and angle the bottle accordingly.
Do not pour overheated liquid into a plastic liner, as it can burst.
Feed baby formula or breast milk only at room temperature.

Though medical researchers have not found one specific cause of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, they have determined several factors that most likely contribute to these tragic infant deaths.

As adults, we consider sleep such a natural part of everyday life that we often don't give it much thought (except, perhaps, that we'd like more of it). However, because of the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), you should definitely give careful thought to how and where your baby sleeps. Though medical researchers have not found one specific cause of SIDS, they have determined several factors that most likely contribute to these tragic infant deaths. As a result, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development have developed the following safe bedding practices for infants:

Place baby on his or her back on a firm, tight-fitting mattress in a crib that meets current safety standards.
Remove pillows, quilts, comforters, sheepskins, stuffed toys, and other soft products from the crib.
Consider using a sleeper or other sleep clothing as an alternative to blankets, with no other covering.
If using a blanket, place baby's feet at the foot of the crib. Tuck a thin blanket around the crib mattress, reaching only as far as the baby's chest.
Make sure your baby's head remains uncovered during sleep.
Do not place baby on a waterbed, sofa, soft mattress, pillow, or other soft surface to sleep.
Mobiles should be removed when babies can pull themselves up or are strong enough to grab dangling items.

In addition to the above guidelines, the Consumer Product Safety Commission also suggests that an infant's crib should have:

A firm, tight-fitting mattress, so a baby cannot get trapped between the mattress and the crib.
No missing, loose, broken, or improperly installed screws, brackets, or other hardware on the crib or mattress support.
No more than 2.38 inches (about the width of a soda can) between crib slats, so a baby's body cannot fit through the slats; no missing or cracked slats.
No corner posts over 0.06 inch high, so a baby's clothing cannot catch.
No cutouts in the headboard or footboard, so a baby's head cannot get trapped.

Whether you need an infant seat, a convertible model, or a booster, you'll find the perfect car seat to keep your on-the-go baby safe and sound.

From the moment you leave the hospital with your precious new cargo, you'll want to be prepared to transport your baby safely--no matter where you go. That's why, before baby arrives, you'll need to do some homework and carefully choose an appropriate car seat.

It's not only for baby's safety and your peace of mind; laws in all 50 states require car seats. But knowing that a car seat is necessary is the easy part. Choosing the right car seat is where it gets tricky. The process is almost like buying a car. There are scads of body types, upholstery styles, safety features, and prices. So fasten your seat belts, parents. Here's Car Seats 101.

Before You Buy

Before going into the nitty-gritty of types and features, keep in mind these helpful guidelines when selecting a safety seat:

Choose a seat that you find easy to use and that fits in your vehicle. Be sure it can be buckled tightly.
Look for the seat you can use in the rear-facing position for as long as possible.
Be aware of weight limits.
Keep in mind that if you buy an infant-only seat, you will need an infant-toddler (convertible) seat later.
Determine what type of seat you need based on your child's age and weight (see chart below).

Car Seats--You Wouldn't Believe the Options
There are as many opinions about the safest, most comfortable, and most convenient car seats as there are car seats. But there is only one absolute to follow in the process. A baby car seat must pass Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Make sure when you're scouting around that the product you choose has passed muster.

There are three types of car seats available:

Infant Seats
(Used specifically for infants up to 22 pounds or 26 inches long.) Although there are many brands and features to choose from, all infant car seats have one thing in common: they are designed to support a developing infant's back, neck, and head. Infant car seats should be installed rear-facing (facing the back window of your vehicle) in the center of your back seat. For added convenience and comfort for baby, many models are available with a stay-in-car base that not only allows you quick installation, but easy and gentle removal from the car without waking your sleeping baby (a feature parents love).

Infant car seats offer two restraint systems:

3-Point Harness A 3-point harness secures your child at the shoulders and between the legs.
5-Point Harness A 5-point harness secures your child at the shoulders, hips, and between the legs.

Infant-Toddler (Convertible) Seats
(For use with newborns up to approximately 20 pounds, then converts to a car seat for infants 20 to 40 pounds.) They are so named because they can be converted from a rear-facing infant seat to a forward-facing seat. This means that your baby can keep the same car seat well into toddlerhood or until she weighs 40 pounds.

Convertible car seats offer three restraint systems:

5-Point Harness Consists of five straps--two at the shoulders, two at the hips, and one at the crotch. This allows parents to adjust the harness closer to baby's body and is easy to buckle and unbuckle. This is the best choice if you're using the seat for a small baby and provides the best protection against head injury.

3-Point Harness with T-Shield This model uses a soft, T-shaped center section to draw the shoulder straps over your child. The "T" then buckles into the seat shell at the crotch. It's simple to use and easy to position. It is not appropriate for an infant whose head does not clear the T-shield. The shield harness should be no more than chest high when fastened.

3-Point Harness with Overhead Shield This padded T-shaped or triangular shield swings down over baby's head, drawing the straps over the shoulders. A third strap buckles the shield to the seat at the crotch. Some are adjustable and can be tightened to accommodate smaller children or loosened for bulky clothing. This restraint system fits properly when the shield is at the child's chest level.

Booster SeatsWhen your child has outgrown the convertible seat, but is too small to use your car's safety belt system alone, it's time to move to a booster seat. Designed specifically to help standard vehicle seat belts fit children better, these specialized seats are appropriate for children who are 4 to 8 years old, weigh between 40 and 80 pounds, and who are less than 4-feet-9-inches tall. By reducing the potential for belt-induced injury which can occur when a lap or lap/shoulder belt is a small child's only restraint, booster seats play a very important role in protecting children as they transition from a child safety seat to an adult-sized lap and shoulder belt.

There are three types of booster seats:

Belt-Positioning Booster Designed for children who weigh between 40 and 80 pounds, belt-positioning boosters are available in high-backed and backless models. The child sits in the booster seat and uses the vehicle lap and shoulder belts for restraint. Lap and shoulder belts together offer better protection than lap belts only.
High-Backed Booster with 5-Point Harness This type of booster seat can be used as a forward-facing child safety seat for a child who weighs between 20 and 40 pounds, or more. The booster seat is attached to vehicle with either the LATCH system's lower anchorages or the vehicle's belt system and tether (if the seat has one), while a 5-point harness provides full body protection. When a child reaches 40 pounds, the 5-point harness is removed and the seat converts to a belt-positioning booster seat. In this configuration the child uses the vehicle's lap and shoulder belts for restraint, and a tether will not be used.
Shield Booster This type of booster seat can be used as a forward-facing child safety seat for a child who weighs between 20 and 40 pounds, or more. The booster seat is attached to the vehicle with either the LATCH system's lower anchorages, or the vehicle's belt system and tether (if the seat has one), while a 5-point harness provides full body protection. With some booster seats, when the shield is removed, the booster seat becomes a belt-positioning booster using the vehicle lap and shoulder belts for restraint. Never allow a child to sit in the booster seat without the shield while using only the lap belt.

What About Preemies? These extra-small bundles of joy need extra attention while on the road. Here are some helpful suggestions when considering a seat for your preemie.

Use a seat with the shortest distances from seat to harness strap slots, and from back to crotch strap.
Supplement baby's comfort and safety by rolling blankets or towels and placing them on either side of baby to keep his head from slumping.
Never place any extra cushioning under or behind the baby.

The New LATCH System

Since September 2002, all new car seats and vehicles have come equipped with an innovative anchorage and tether system known as Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children, or LATCH. LATCH is a standardized child restraint system designed to simplify child safety seat installation and enhance child safety. The result of a new government regulation (FMVSS 225) aimed at reducing the number of car seats that are installed improperly, the goal of the LATCH system is simple: to increase the effectiveness of car seats by requiring an easy-to-use anchorage system independent of the vehicle seat belts. The LATCH system calls for vehicles to be equipped with one upper (tether) and two lower anchorage points. The upper (tether) anchorage is a ringlike object permanently attached to the vehicle on either the rear filler panel or on the cargo floor, depending on the vehicle. The two lower anchorages are a set of two small bars in the rear seat of the vehicle, generally located where the seat cushion meets the seat back. Outfitted with permanently affixed hooks or buckles that are compatible with the anchorages in the vehicle, LATCH-equipped car seats attach to the vehicle seat via these anchorages instead of being held by the vehicle's seat belts.

Safety Tips

To be sure you're making the most of your seat's innovative safety features, be sure to follow these guidelines from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

Use the lowest harness slots for a newborn. Keep the straps in the slots at or below your baby's shoulders for the rear-facing position.
It's important for an infant to ride sitting semi-reclined, about halfway back or 45 degrees from horizontal.
Make sure harness straps fit properly over the shoulders and between the legs of your infant.
To fill empty spaces and give support, roll up a couple of small blankets and tuck them in on each side of your baby's shoulders and head.
Never use any car seat or booster car seat in a seat with an air bag.
Be sure that the car seat you purchase is appropriate for your child's height and weight.
Send in the manufacturer's registration card. If by any chance your car seat is recalled, you will be notified by the manufacturer.
The base of your car seat should rest firmly on the seat, and the vehicle's belt must be able to secure it tightly. If it moves an inch in any direction, it's too loose.
If your car has lap and shoulder belts with a free-sliding latch, you must use the locking clip included with most car seats. (Locking clips are also sold separately.) Follow manufacturer's instructions for installation. If you have any questions, contact the manufacturer. Also, many local police stations, fire stations, and hospitals can offer you assistance.
To make sure you have installed your car seat correctly, attend a car seat safety check and read our Safety Tips for Car Seat Installation from the NHTSA. Many local fire departments, police stations, healthcare facilities, and even some local baby stores like Babies "R" Us will periodically hold these meetings and will examine your car seat installation at no charge.
Avoid used car seats. Normal wear and involvement in accidents may limit their effectiveness. Also, they may not conform to present safety standards.

Here are some additional car seat safety tips as set forth by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA):

Always follow all manufacturers’ instructions for both the vehicle and the car seat.
The back seat is the safest place to ride.
Infants must ride rear-facing or in a car bed.
Always anchor the car seat to the car using the seat belt exactly as directed by the car seat manufacturer.
Never use a car seat in a seating location with an air bag.
Always check that the car seat is securely installed. A locking clip may be necessary. Read the vehicle owner’s manual for information on other belt accessories that may be required.
Do not use a car seat that is more than 6 years old or one that has ever been involved in a crash.
Do not use a car seat that is missing the manufacturer’s label showing the name of the manufacturer, model number, and date of manufacture.
Set a good example and make sure the entire family buckles up.

General Shopping Guidelines

Be sure it's a car seat. Sounds like a no-brainer, but you'd be surprised at how easy it is to confuse some of the newer, top-of-the-line carriers with car seats. Make sure the product description specifies "car seat."

Look for car seats featuring easy-release latches and buckles. When your hands are full, an easy release can save aggravation.

Make sure there's wiggle room. You want your baby to be comfortable year-round, so allow room in the seat for bundling up during cold weather. Make sure the product description indicates that the seat accommodates larger youngsters than yours.

Read what other parents have to say. Read customer reviews from other parents--see what they think about installation, overall ease of use, etc. Look for products that have received a rating of four or more stars. Adjustable mattress height: Holding up the mattress support at each corner of the crib, multiple mattress height adjustments allow you to raise or lower the height of the mattress, a versatile feature that becomes increasingly important as your child grows larger and inevitably tries to climb out of the crib.
Release mechanism:The release mechanism is a very important component of a crib and performs a dual role: it allows parents to lower the drop sides of the crib for easy access, while preventing baby from lowering them accidentally. You'll find this essential feature in one of three forms--metal rods, trigger releases, and knee releases. Regardless of the configuration, a release mechanism should always be childproof.
Teething rails: These aptly named strips of plastic fit over the top of the crib's railings and prevent little ones from gnawing directly on the wood. Teething rails are usually installed by the manufacturer, but they can also be purchased separately in 12-inch sections and attached at home.
Rolling casters: Available in either plastic or metal, rolling casters should come with a locking mechanism. The ability to lock down the wheels will become more important as your baby approaches toddlerhood and begins to stand upright while holding onto things--including the side of the crib.

Crib Safety Guidelines: The crib you select should always meet all current national safety standards. Many older cribs do not meet all current safety standards. You should not purchase an old crib at a garage sale or accept a hand-me-down as a gift. Parents should always read through and follow the manufacturer's instructions pertaining to both assembly and daily usage before setting up and using a new crib. Here are some additional crib safety guidelines, as compiled by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA):

Infants should always sleep in a crib which meets current federal and ASTM standards. Never place infants to sleep on pillows, sofa cushions, adult beds, waterbeds, beanbags, or any other surface not specifically designed for sleeping infants.
Remember to always keep the drop side up when baby is in the crib.
Take rattles, squeeze toys, teethers, plush toys, and other items out of baby's crib when baby is sleeping or unattended. Remove pillows, quilts, comforters, sheepskins, pillowlike stuffed toys, and other pillowlike products from the crib.
Never place your crib near windows, draperies, blinds, or wall-mounted decorative accessories with long cords.
Select bumper pads that fit around the entire crib and tie or snap securely into place
Use bumper pads only until the child can pull up to a standing position. Then remove them so baby cannot use the pads to climb out of the crib.
Mobiles should also be removed when baby can stand up.
Make sure there are no missing, loose, broken, or improperly installed screws, brackets, or other hardware on the crib or mattress support.
Crib slats or spindles should be spaced no more than 2.38 inches apart, and none should be loose or missing.
Never use a crib with corner posts over 0.06 inch above the end panels (unless they're over 16 inches high, for a canopy). Babies can strangle if their clothes become caught on corner posts. These should be unscrewed or sawed off and the remaining end panels sanded smooth.
There should be no cutout areas on the headboard or footboard, so baby's head can't get trapped.
There should be no cracked or peeling paint.
There should be no splinters or rough edges.
Look for the JPMA Certification Seal.

Crib Mattresses

When it comes to crib mattresses , you essentially get what you pay for. Manufactured in a standard 52-by-27-inch size, most are 6 inches thick and typically come with a white or off-white cover. But that's where the similarities end. There are two types of mattresses on the market, foam and innerspring, and each has its own strengths and weaknesses. Here's a look at the differences between the two:

Mattress Types:

1. Foam: Made of polyester or polyether material, foam mattresses typically weigh less and are less expensive than their innerspring counterparts. Their weight depends on the density of foam used in their construction: the denser the foam, the heavier the mattress. A denser foam mattress will provide a firmer surface for baby and will keep its shape longer, while a lighter mattress makes changing baby's sheets every week a little easier on the back.

2. Innerspring: Like most adult mattresses, innerspring crib mattresses come with an innerspring unit containing rows of steel coils. These coils can vary in both number and in quality and directly affect the firmness and weight of the mattress. Innerspring mattresses also have an insulator layer that sits on top of the coils to prevent them from penetrating the top layers, a cushioning layer or layers of foam or natural cotton, and a mattress cover.

Buying Tips:

For both foam and innerspring mattresses, the quality of the material and the number of layers that are used in the padding, or ticking, will help determine how long the mattress will last. Some mattresses have double- or triple-laminated ticking, and many have a layer made of heavy-gauge nylon that is bonded to a layer of waterproof material. In addition to providing water resistance, a nylon layer will make the mattress more resistant to tearing.
Apply the two-finger sizing test: place the mattress in the crib and try to fit two fingers between the outer edge of the mattress and the rods or spindles that run along the sides of the crib. If you can fit two fingers into this space, the space is too big and the mattress is not the right size for the crib. Baby could potentially get trapped between the mattress and the side of the crib.
An overly soft mattress is a suffocation hazard, especially for infants and newborns, so choose the firmest mattress that you can afford to buy. When shopping for a foam mattress, it is a good idea to test the mattress for firmness by pressing your hand on it and seeing how quickly it regains its original shape.
Look for a crib mattress with vent holes, typically located on either side. By allowing musty odors to escape, these will help keep a mattress smelling fresh over years of use

Mattress Accessories: Along with the bedding you select, there are a number of accessories you can purchase to protect your crib mattress and make it more comfortable for the diminutive person who will be sleeping on it. Crib sheets, sheet savers, and waterproof mattress pads can extend the life of the mattress and are usually available in either a fitted form or with zippers. Always use a crib sheet that fits securely on the mattress and wraps around the mattress corners.

Bassinets, Cradles, and Portable Cribs

As an alternative to a full-size crib, an infant or newborn can bed down in a bassinet for the first three or four months of life. These can be very convenient for Mom and Dad because they can be placed right next to a parent's bed at night for quick feedings and diaper changes. Bassinets are often small enough to be moved around the house without difficulty, allowing parents and caretakers to work, clean, or relax in different rooms of the house during the day while still keeping a close eye on baby.

Like bassinets, cradles are small sleeping beds that can be placed near a parent's bed at night or used during the day as a portable sleeping bed for babies during their first few months at home. These are almost always equipped with some kind of mechanism that will produce a side-to-side motion designed to lull your little one to sleep. Although most traditionally styled cradles have two floor rockers that allow you to rock the cradle from side to side, some cradles come with a frame suspended on hooks that will gently sway rather than rock.

Key Features:

Look for a wide, stable base on the bassinet or cradle and follow the manufacturer's safety guidelines for babies' appropriate weight and size. Because they are closer to ground level than a full-size crib, bassinets and cradles can sometimes pose a problem in a household where there are large pets or other young children. Cradles should have a wide base that remains stable when the cradle is in motion.
Make sure that the bottom is strong enough to hold a mattress and that the mattress is sized properly. As with a crib mattress, you should not be able to fit more than two fingers between the mattress and the side of the bassinet or cradle.
Because most bassinets are made of wicker or woven wooden splints, always check to see that there are no sharp edges or loose splints that could potentially injure your baby.
Bassinets or cradles with folding legs and/or wheels should have locking mechanisms so that the legs don't collapse and the bassinet doesn't move while baby is sleeping inside.
Parents should follow all of the same guidelines for SIDS prevention that they would follow in a full-size crib.
Baby should be moved to a crib once she approaches the upper weight limit recommended by the manufacturer, or at any time if she appears crowded or uncomfortable.

Portable Cribs: Compact versions of their full-size counterparts, portable cribs can be easily folded up for storage at home or thrown in the back of a car for short trips and outings where you'll need a place for baby to take a nap. Portable cribs can be made of metal or wood and are usually small enough to fit through doorways, making them a good choice for travel and extended visits to Grandmother's house.

Changing Tables

Although you can change a baby on nearly any flat surface, by establishing a safe, designated diapering and changing area in the nursery, changing tablescan make it easier for parents and caretakers to keep this regular activity neatly organized and sanitary. These specialized tables should be able to hold all of the supplies you will need on a day-to-day basis to take care of baby's diaper-changing needs, including clean diapers, wipes or washcloths, diaper creams, waterproof pads, and clean clothes. Because they typically stand around waist high for the average adult, changing tables can also eliminate some of the back strain that results from repeatedly bending over to change a baby inside of a crib, or crouching down to change a baby on the floor.

Changing tables are typically made of wood and come with high protective rails, a waterproof pad, and a sturdy safety belt on top, along with some kind of storage area underneath. Because they are generally used until baby is potty trained, or for an average of about two years, parents should look for a changing table that feels sturdy, has a wide, stable base, and has all of the built-in features they want.

There are three different styles of changing tables, each with a different type of storage area beneath the changing surface. Some have an open-shelf system where everything on the shelves is in sight and easy to reach, while others are equipped with a set of dresser drawers. Changing tables with dresser drawers offer a little more versatility, as they can be used for storage after your child has outgrown the table itself. Combination-style changing tables come with both open shelves and built-in drawers.

Changing Table Safety Tips: In addition to reading all of the manufacturer's instructions, parents should read through the following safety guidelines for changing tables, compiled by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA):

When selecting a changing table, look for one with straps that help prevent baby from falling.
If the changing table does not come with straps, purchase them separately and install them on the changing table.
Always use these straps to restrain baby when he's on the changing table.
Be sure any baby products you need, such as powder or wipes, are easily accessible.
Never turn your back on baby when reaching for baby products.
Most importantly, never leave baby unattended, even for the shortest moment

Changing Pads

Providing a soft surface and a waterproof barrier, changing pads come in a variety of sizes and types: vinyl, cloth, disposable, and contoured.

Vinyl changing pads come in a variety of colors and can be easily wiped clean with a wet cloth.
Cloth changing pads typically have a waterproof layer on the bottom to protect the surface of the changing table. They can be safely thrown in with the laundry for convenient cleaning.
Disposable changing pads are usually available in multipacks and have waterproof backings to prevent accidental leaks.
Contoured changing pads have a concave shape to prevent baby from rolling or sliding off of the pad. You can place these on any table or flat surface to create a convenient changing station.

Dressers and Armoires

When shopping for a dresser, consider the space it will be occupying in the nursery, what will be stored inside, and how a child might potentially use it in the future. A tall dresser will work well if you're short on space or you're worried about a child reaching up and pulling out its contents, while a low bureau provides easy access to drawers for toddlers who will someday want to select their own clothes and dress themselves from time to time.

Armoires can also be a good choice for baby's nursery and provide additional storage options. In addition to a set of lower drawers, armoires are typically equipped with a horizontal pole in the top cupboard to hang small outfits, dresses, and jackets. This top section can also be left open as a display shelf for pictures, toys, books, and other decorative keepsakes.

Buying Tips: Like every piece of furniture that will live in your baby's nursery, dressers and armoires should be selected with an eye toward safety and durability. Choose one that will work aesthetically, but make sure that it is sturdy and free of obvious defects and dangerous components. There should also be no loose splinters or sharp edges that could cause injuries. Check the center guides or gliders that the drawers roll on to see that they work properly. Drawers should slide smoothly in both directions and you shouldn't be able to pull them completely out of the unit. Keep in mind that you may have to install safety locks on the drawers if, in the future, your baby or toddler decides that they enjoy pulling them out and climbing on them. With that inevitability in mind, parents should avoid dressers and armoires that have overly heavy drawers and doors that can shut quickly--and painfully--on a small child's fingers and hands.

Gliders and Ottomans

In lieu of traditional wooden
rocking chairs, with their hard wooden seats and decorative spindle backs, today's ultracomfortable gliders and ottomans provide the modern parent with a luxurious and relaxing way to lull their little ones into a deep and dream-filled sleep. These smoothly operating chairs are typically much more comfortable than standard rocking chairs, and come with thick seat and back cushions and a ball-bearing mechanism that makes creating a gentle back-and-forth motion almost effortless.

A glider will probably be one of the most expensive items you will buy for your child's nursery. Fortunately, these high-end chairs are usually very well made and should offer years of trouble-free service and comfort. Most gliders are made of wood, with a wide variety of finish and upholstery styles to choose from. Because they are often used in other rooms in the house after baby has grown up, try to select a glider that matches or coordinates with your nursery décor and furnishings, and also fits in well with some of the other rooms in the house.

Look for a glider that feels good, with good back support, an easy, trouble-free rocking motion, and a comfortable size. Cushioned armrests are also important when you're spending many hours cradling a growing baby in your tired arms. Many gliders are also equipped with a hand brake that locks the glider in one position. Make sure that there is no sharp metal hardware on the base or front of the glider, or exposed joints around the base or hand brake that could injure tiny fingers and hands. Finally, while it isn't a necessity, a matching gliding ottoman can add additional comfort and be used well beyond the baby and toddler years as a luxurious addition to the family room, living room, or master bedroom.

Playards

Having gradually replaced the traditional playpen in recent years,
playards, otherwise known as travel yards, can provide parents with a great deal of versatility at home or on the go. Most are constructed just like a playpen, with metal tubing and mesh, but they typically use lighter materials and fabrics, which makes them much more portable. Playards are generally smaller than the traditional playpen and usually come in a space-saving rectangular shape, in contrast to a playpen's larger, square dimensions. Although they can be folded up for compact storage and travel, most playards are small enough to be pulled and pushed through doorways without having to be collapsed, and many of them have wheels that make moving them around the house even easier. Available in simple, no-frills models, you can also purchase a playard with a wide array of optional features and add-ons that will increase their versatility, while also increasing the price considerably. Here is a list of the basic options and add-ons:

Bassinet: Some playards come with a bassinet insert that fits inside the larger unit--a handy addition for parents with a newborn or smaller infant. You can use the insert until baby weighs around 15 pounds and then simply detach and remove it.
Canopy: Creating a little shade inside the playard and protecting baby from harmful UV rays, canopy attachments are a good choice if you plan on using the playard outside on a regular basis. Make sure it fits snugly into place on the playard, and never leave baby unattended while the canopy is attached.
Changing station: Some playards come with a changing station, but these can also be purchased separately and installed. They typically snap into place over one half of the playard and act as a portable changing table.

Sheets: Most playards do not come with sheets or covers, but these can be purchased separately so you have a clean, comfortable surface for baby to nap and play on.

Special Safety Considerations: Because they are designed specifically as a portable play and napping area, and because they have a frame that collapses, playards with faulty components or even those that haven't been set up properly can pose a serious and potentially life-threatening hazard to a baby. This should be followed by a thorough inspection of the playard's components each and every time it is set up and used. Make sure there are no exposed or loose threads where the floor fabric and the mesh siding are sewn together. Almost all playards have a hard floorboard with a layer of padding over the top of it. This should be inspected carefully to ensure that it fits snugly against the playard's mesh sides, leaving no room for baby to become wedged or trapped underneath.

Playards double as playpens and portable cribs for naps away from home. They should never be used for sleeping at night, and parents should never leave a baby unattended while playing or napping inside. Try to find a playard that is easy to set up and take down, but never purchase or use one that wobbles or appears unsafe. All of the playard's latching features should be securely attached and work properly and parents should never leave extra padding or other objects inside the playard, as these could be used by little ones as a way to climb out while no one is watching. Choose a playard with mesh holes no larger than 1/4 inch. Slats on a wooden playard should be no more than 2.38 inches apart.
Check vinyl- or fabric-covered rails frequently for holes and tears.
Don't tie items across the top of the playard, as they can entangle baby and cause strangulation.

Pump Accessories If you have a killer commute, you'll want to invest in an adapter so you can plug your electric pump into your car's cigarette lighter. Freezer bags are a great no-fuss, sterile way to store expressed milk, and labels for stored breast milk will remind you what milk to use first, or if it needs to be discarded (usually after three months for frozen milk).

Getting Started

A stroller is unquestionably one of the most frequently used and indispensable items you'll need for your baby. These four-wheeled wonders come in all shapes, sizes, and fabrics, with every feature you can imagine. From active and all-terrain strollers; easy-to-handle, lightweight ones; sturdy, classic carriage strollers; and much more, it's no wonder that shopping for one can often be an overwhelming experience, especially for the first-time parent.

What to Consider Before You Buy

Because your stroller will most likely be used on a daily basis well through the toddler years, it is important to find the one that best suits your lifestyle and budget. Also keep in mind that your stroller needs will change as your baby grows and you may find one--or more--that is just right for you.

So how do you choose between a luxurious pram-style carriage, a rugged jogger stroller, or a super lightweight and compact model? Naturally, safety and comfort are high on your list of priorities. But there are several other important things to consider before you begin shopping:

Your Lifestyle If you plan to do a lot of walking, you'll need a sturdy model with good suspension. If you rely on public transport, size, weight, and portability are essential considerations. Check how quick and easy it is to fold for catching a bus or negotiating a flight of stairs. If you are doing more walking than driving, you'll need a stroller that can take you around the block and downtown. If you're a suburban driving machine, you will be A-OK with a model that is lightweight, stores easily in your trunk, and has good maneuverability. For the athletes and outdoorsy types in the audience, a jogger might be just what you are looking for.

Space Limitations How big is it, folded and unfolded? Will it fit in the trunk or back seat of your car? Will it fit through an average-size door? Can you take it on a subway or bus?

Stroller Weight If a lot of lifting and climbing stairs is expected, choose a lightweight stroller. Trying to coerce a heavier model up or down stairs isn't safe for you or baby.

Your Child's Age Only strollers that fully recline are appropriate for babies under 3 months old, while a convertible stroller will take you through the toddler years. If you have more than one child, a double stroller is an obvious choice (be sure to get one that fully reclines if you have one or more young infants). And, for toddlers, a lightweight or umbrella stroller is just right.

Your Height While your baby's comfort and safety are most important, remember to also consider your height and stride when making a choice (longer legs take longer steps). Your stroller needs to be comfortable for both you and your partner, so look for a model with adjustable handle height if you plan to share pushing responsibilities.

Wheel Type Unless you are looking for the additional stability offered by the fixed-position and oversize wheels usually found on joggers and larger prams, fully independent wheels are recommended for mall and supermarket use. Their caster-like movement allows for the best maneuverability and many models feature a locking device to point the front wheels straight forward for added stability.

Will This Be Your Only Stroller?Many parents have two (or three) strollers for various needs. A full-size stroller is great for longer, bumpier rides, and the ultracompact umbrella fits everywhere from your trunk to an overhead bin on an airplane. If you're only buying one, keep portability at the top of your list.

Sanity-Saving Features When you are shopping for a car, you usually know if you want AC or power door locks. There are many innovative and sanity/time-saving stroller features available today. Some models boast the beloved one-hand-fold feature, which you'll find indispensable while packing your baby and your stroller back into your car; others have all-terrain wheels; and still others have parent trays. Bells and whistles can sometimes make all the difference; other times, they seem silly. Plan ahead and think about what you can and cannot live without.

Your Budget It is possible to find a great stroller without spending a fortune. And, of course, you can find subpar strollers at sky-high prices. However, more often than not, you get what you pay for. Think carefully about the features you need, and then narrow by budget. Your purchase could potentially last you from your child's infancy well through the toddler years, so investing in a quality pick might be more economical in the long run.

Types and Key Features
For something that is supposed to be a convenience by its very nature, the search for the perfect stroller can be quite an overwhelming experience. Never fear. Here's a look at the basic types:

Full Size

Considered the "limousine" of strollers, full-size strollers offer numerous convenience and comfort options. Although heavier than other styles, there are some full-size models designed with aluminum frames for easier maneuvering as well as rust-resistance. Ranging from English-style buggies to feature-rich rugged models, the full-size stroller is a great all-purpose pick. Most are typically convertible--that is, they can be used as a carriage or a stroller, so they grow with your baby. Full-size strollers are appropriate for newborns because they have a full-recline feature, shock-absorbing suspension system, and oversize wheels to keep baby comfortable while strolling over varying terrain, and they remain suitable for use until your child reaches approximately 3 or 4 years of age.

Features may include: Multiple-position seat recline and strong back support, removable weather boot, extra seat padding, removable front tray, large storage basket, European-style canopy, reversible handle for conversion to carriage, dual wheel brakes, and adjustable footrest.

Age range: If the stroller reclines fully, it is appropriate for a newborn. It can be used with children up to 3 to 4 years of age.

Mid Size

Midsize strollers are designed to be portable and fold easily and compactly. You will most likely find the greatest range of prices ($40 to $500) and features in this category. Made of aluminum, the frames are relatively lightweight (typically just over 15 pounds), durable, and easy to maintain. Because of these features, they offer a smooth ride for city dwellers or those who enjoy longer walks. Because they are a bit heavier than a lightweight, they are sometimes not the best choice for travel. Although the convenient midsize strollers will offer your infant a safe and comfortable ride indoors and outdoors, only those models that offer a full-reclining seat feature are appropriate for use with newborns.

Features may include: Easy-to-use folding mechanism, midweight body (typically just over 15 pounds), canopy, and roomy storage basket. Deluxe models may include features like a fully reclining seat, extendable handle, and larger, all-terrain wheels.

Age range: If a midsize stroller fully reclines (and most do), it is safe for your newborn.

Light Weight

Light as a feather and easy to fold, lightweight strollers generally offer the most basic features and are made to store easily in an overhead bin, trunk, or closet. While these lightweight models are unbeatable for quick jaunts to the store, many parents find that they aren't as comfortable for children on longer stints as their midsize or full-size counterparts. Still, many parents feel a lightweight stroller is great to have when a buggy, pram, or travel system is too unwieldy (while traveling, for example).

Ultralightweight models, dubbed "umbrella" because of their hooked handles, are best when used as a second stroller. If you are looking for a lightweight, affordable stroller that's easy to take along for the ride (or toss in the trunk of your car), this would be the perfect choice. Do keep in mind, however, that umbrella strollers are not recommended for use with newborns or infants who require a fully reclining seat and head and neck support. Featuring aluminum frames and weighing as little as 5 pounds, most umbrella models offer a safety device that prevents accidental closing. Umbrella strollers are available in a wide range of prices according to the features offered, and will last you well into the early preschool years (3 to 4).

Features may include: Aluminum frames, semireclining seat (some fully recline), canopy, one-step fold, locking swivel wheels, and superlight weight.

Age range: If the lightweight stroller reclines fully, it is safe for a newborn; however, most umbrella strollers do not fully recline or have suspension features, so it is best to wait until your baby is at least 4 to 6 months old.

Travel Systems

One of the most convenient innovations in the stroller industry in recent years has been the travel system--a convenience stroller and infant car seat in one. The infant car seat provides head, back, and neck support for your newborn, while keeping baby in a comfortable, reclined position, just like a carriage. With the stay-in-car base feature, the infant car seat can also be used as an infant carrier. This allows you to take the infant car seat from the car to stroller and vice versa without ever disturbing your baby. Many travel system manufacturers have designed these strollers so that the car seat inserts with baby facing you. However, there are styles that allow you to insert the car seat so that baby can either face toward you or away from you. Either style will offer your baby a comfortable and secure ride. Once baby outgrows the infant car seat, it can be removed, converting the system into a convenience stroller. The stroller's own seating and restraint system is used until your child is approximately 4 years old. These strollers are designed to fold quickly, easily, and compactly for storage, and offer many features that will make it a comfortable ride... for both of you.

Stroller features may include: Child play tray; parent cup holder; 3-point or 5-point harness system (not overhead); removable, washable pad; all-terrain, swivel wheels; brakes that set with a lever or foot pedal; seat recline; and storage basket.

Infant car seat features may include: Canopy, level indicator, ergonomically designed handle, head cushion, stay-in-car base.

Age range: Newborn (for car seat) to toddler (stroller).

Joggers

Want to bring baby along for the workout or for an adventure in the great outdoors? You'll recognize a jogger stroller by its unique design. Many are three-wheeled vehicles, complete with comfortable seating, a parking brake, a storage basket, and all-terrain wheels. Most are made to fold quickly, easily, and compactly and are great for travel. Because jogger strollers don't offer a fully reclining seat, most pediatricians recommend not using them until your child's 6-month mark. Most joggers can hold up to 75 pounds, but truth be told, your child will probably outgrow the seat before then. Also keep in mind (with young babies in particular) that while most jogger models are designed for some bumps along the trail, if you are planning on climbing Mount Kilimanjaro or are traveling over very rough and rocky terrain, it's probably best to leave baby safely at home or try a backpack instead.

If you are a serious road runner, look for smooth tires--the bigger, the better. If you will be running on fire trails, strolling to a soccer game, and so forth, knobby tires, with better traction, are the way to go. If you live in a wet climate you may want to invest in aluminum rims and an aluminum frame (which prevents rusting and is more lightweight). While aluminum is typically more expensive, you'll probably find that it is worth it in the long run.

Features may include: All-terrain wheels; wrist strap; hand brake; durable, weatherproof fabric; sturdy construction; adjustable handlebar height; better suspension; and a storage pouch.

Age range: Most pediatricians recommend waiting until your baby is approximately 6 months of age. Depending on its size, you can use this type of stroller well into the toddler years.

Double And Triple

If you're the lucky parent of multiples or if you have an infant and toddler in your household, walking them by yourself may sound next to impossible... unless you have a stroller made especially for more than one child. Double and triple strollers offer the convenience of walking two (or three) children at the same time as comfortably as if you were walking just one. These strollers are also handy for carrying a child and groceries, once one child has outgrown it. They are available in a wide variety of fabrics and features. Double strollers are appropriate for newborns only when the full-reclining seat feature is available and can be used until your toddler is approximately 4 years old.

There are two types of double strollers:

Front-to-Back (Tandem) Style Front-to-back style: infants face forward, one in back of the other. These strollers fold easily and compactly for storage or travel. For maneuverability, this is a good choice; however, there is that "front seat" issue. Some models, however, do give the back seat a "boost" so that both babies can enjoy the view. The front-to-back style is best if you have an older child and a newborn. Features may include: a single canopy hood, separate canopies, individually reclining seats, rear wheel brakes, fully retractable rear seat for a sleeping infant, removable/washable pads, separate footrests, and restraining straps with safety buckle.
Side-by-Side Style Infants sit next to each other. These strollers are lightweight and fold quickly and compactly. Most will fit through normal-size doorways, although due to their sheer width it can be difficult to maneuver this "minivan" of sorts through grocery stores, crowded events, or if your children vary greatly in size or weight. The side-by-side style is most commonly used by parents of twins (or two or more children of comparable weight). Features may include: European styling, thick padding, removable/washable pads, individually reclining seats, single shared canopy, storage basket, footrest, and restraining straps with safety buckle.

Age range: As with the single stroller, if the seats recline fully, the stroller is appropriate for a newborn. You can use it until your children are 3 to 4 years old.

Stroller Frames

A great way to utilize your existing infant car seat is with a stroller frame. The metal frame of the stroller actually allows you to snap most major infant car seat brands into place. These frames are made to be extremely lightweight, easy to transport, and fold compactly--making them great for travel. A storage basket is also usually included.

Accessories

Much like with a car, you may find that adding some accessories, such as a toy bar, a canopy, or an infant headrest, can make your four-wheeled wonder a better place for baby. Check out our selection of stroller toys, weather shields and umbrellas, stroller covers, and infant headrests.

Safety Tips

To keep your baby safe and sound while strolling, the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) suggests you follow these guidelines:

Choose a stroller or carriage that has a base wide enough to prevent tipping, even when your baby leans over the side.
If the seat adjusts to a reclining position, make sure the stroller doesn't tip backward when the child lies down.
Always secure the baby by using the stroller's seat belt.
Don't hang pocketbooks or shopping bags over the handles. If your stroller has a shopping basket for carrying packages, it should be low on the back of the stroller or directly over the rear wheels.
Use the locking device to prevent accidental folding and apply the brakes to limit rotation of the wheels when the stroller or carriage is stationary.
When you fold or unfold the stroller, keep your baby's hands away from areas that could pinch tiny fingers.
Look for the JPMA Certification Seal.

canopy This fabric--sometimes collapsible--shield helps protect baby from sun, wind, and rain.
5-point harness This type of harness consists of five straps: two at the shoulders, two at the legs, and one at the crotch. This allows parents to adjust the harness closer to the infant's body and is easy to buckle and unbuckle.
weather boot This fabric "pod" usually snaps onto the stroller seat or bar, keeping baby's legs and feet warm and dry.

Goodmorning everyone,

The exciting news for today is, that I finally got accepted by Sears as an
online affiliate. Sears has top quality appliances, Craftsmen tools, and
so much more. They stand behind their products with a satisfaction guaranteed
warranty on most everything they sell, plus they have been around a very long
time. I remember as a child, the big Sears catalogs. I could just spend hours
looking thru them. Today is just to let you know about our new affiliation. I

It's nearly 10:00 A.M.. I'm late getting the blog done today. I got a lot of medical bills in the mail, and the problem is everything was billed to me, but I haven't been hospitalized lately. The bottom line someone by the name of Barbara J. King was in an auto accident and got hospitalized Nov 14th thru 18th last year, and all her bills got billed to my insurance co. A few more phone calls and it should all be straightened out. But sure had me worried for a while..I thought I had someone steal my identity!

I had to do a reintro on Advertising Mom's Network, so I thought I would post it here for all of you to read, so you will get to know me better. Here goes.....

Hi Everyone,
I'm Barbara King owner of A Mom's shop and Direct Sales Connection. I have about 12 websites that I have connected to A Mom's Shop. I started the new Mom's Who Sell network on ryze on Dec. 23rd. That was a Christmas present to myself...LOL.

Here goes, I'm rather a private person, but I'll tell you a little more about me. I am a retired programmer/analyst. I did most of my 'famous' work for some big corportations. I coded an accounts payable package for Mobil Chemical, and I put the birth and death certificates online for Health And Human Services in Houston, Tx. Those were bygone days.LOL..
That was just to show you I'm not stupid..

Today, here and now, I'm 58 years old, retired, and a widow. My story on the iternet began several months after the death of my husband in Nov. 2003. I had sooo much time on my hands, and nothing to do. My daughter was away much of the time at college. I didn't know much about PC's but I had this great desire to jump in with both feet. I coded A Mom's Shop from scratch. It has been online since September 2004. I've learned a lot in the last few months, and I have certainly found that "something to do".

My goals are to make a lot of new friends, and add a little to my income. I just love all the new people that I have met, each is unique with their own story. I give what I can back to the community. I'f you're a WAHM and broke, I'll put your ad up for free for a month.

I really would like for A Mom's Shop to be a place people could shop and find lots of products and shops operated by work at home moms.

I entered this new year with lots of anticipation and intend to do all I can to make it a successful year for all the WAHP that I meet along the way.

What I've been doing today

I spent the biggest part of the day looking over ad rotation services, and finally decided on one and signed up. I got the code in place for banner rotation on A Mom's Shop home page, and the mall page. I changed all the advertising page to reflect the ad rotations.

I am going to use the blog to highlight each week the specials and discounts for A Mom's Shop Mall and will also mention my new advertisers as they sign up. I am exploring new marketing ideas for the mall, and am working hard to increase sales.
